Personal Intro Reel

A motion graphics-based personal intro detailing who I am as a person, with the inclusion of voice-overs, music, clips, and graphics.

The Challenge

I was tasked with creating a personal introduction using Adobe After Effects that communicated who I am, where I’m from, my passions, and my experience in the design field. While I aimed to strengthen my technical skills—particularly in tweening—I also wanted to push beyond a standard introduction by developing a concept that felt visually engaging and uniquely personal.

The challenge was to balance technical exploration with clear storytelling, resulting in a cohesive piece that effectively represented my identity through motion design. My goal was to create a dynamic and engaging introduction using eye-catching motion graphics and thoughtfully integrated visuals.

The Process

To manage the scope of the project, I broke the content into smaller sections and began by writing a structured script. This allowed me to plan corresponding visuals for each segment and maintain a clear narrative flow.

I incorporated a mix of pre-existing footage and newly filmed clips to support different sections of the introduction. To further personalize the piece, I created hand-drawn graphics, including a stylized persona, which added a distinctive and cohesive visual element beyond standard video overlays.

Throughout the project, I experimented with tweening techniques to enhance motion and transitions. For example, in the section introducing where I’m from, I developed an animation inspired by rotating logo movements, simulating interactive elements appearing through mouse clicks.

For another segment, I recreated Polaroid-style images in Adobe Photoshop and imported them into After Effects. I then animated their placement using scale, position, motion blur, and opacity adjustments to simulate a natural, tactile movement.

During post-production, I recognized an opportunity to strengthen the overall composition and added a green border to reduce negative space and create a more visually cohesive frame.

The Outcome

The final piece successfully combined motion graphics, video, and illustration to create an engaging personal introduction. Peer feedback highlighted areas for improvement in audio clarity and pacing, particularly regarding voiceover volume and delivery speed. These insights emphasized the importance of balancing visual design with strong audio execution.

Key Takeaways

  • Finalizing a script before filming ensures a more efficient and cohesive production process.

  • Subtle animation techniques, such as motion blur and opacity transitions, significantly improve the smoothness of tweened motion.

  • Audio quality and pacing are critical components of an effective motion design project.

Reflection

If revisiting this project, I would further explore experimental approaches to presenting information and place greater emphasis on audio production. Overall, this project strengthened both my technical proficiency in After Effects and my ability to combine storytelling with motion design.
